What I Can Offer to Puppies & Dogs and Their Owners:

I run small and friendly group training & socialising classes for puppies at venues in Brixham, Totnes & Torquay. The classes are both fun and educational and teach life skills for puppies and puppy survival skills for owners! Once you have attended one of my puppy courses you can go on to do other training and activities with me such as:-

  • A 'follow-on' group training class that I call 'The Improvers'
  • The After School Club where, amongst other things, we do group dog walks
  • 'Agility for Fun' courses
  • One-to-one training sessions in your home
  • Pet (dog and cat) behaviour consultations for more serious behavioural issues

You may also like to know that I am a qualified veterinary surgeon and worked in small animal practice for 9 years before moving into behaviour and training work on a full time basis, which I have been doing for 13 years. So you will be getting a professional, fully insured service, with lots of detailed advice backed up by academic qualifications and experience - nearly 3000 dogs have been through my paws - over 2400 in puppy classes and over 500 in one-to-ones and behaviour consultations. So, whether you are a complete dog novice, are experiencing the shock of not having had a puppy for some years, or are an experienced repeat owner wanting to keep up to date and get some well needed socialisation for your dog, my puppy courses may well be just the job.

Messages From My Clients:

Ben, the Goldendoodle

Hi Sara. Thought I would let you know how my humans and I are getting on. We learnt such a lot at your classes and I try to behave, well most of the time anyway! My humans used to keep reminding me not to jump up at people but I got so excited and I only wanted to play and say hello. Since your classes my humans now get me to sit when we meet people and I get lots of praise and tasty treats and everyone thinks I'm very good. I'm so pleased we came to your classes because my humans learnt the correct way to train me. I'm still learning how to train my humans when I get the chance! Thank you Sara. Ben Downing, the Goldendoodle (and his mum and dad, Sheila & George).

Google, the Miniature Dachshund

It was Google’s and my good fortune when I picked up a flyer at my vets for your puppy classes. Every session was constructive, informative and invaluable to both owners and dogs for socialising and training. I will recommend your training classes wholeheartedly to all dog owners no matter what the breed, size, or temperament of their ‘man’s best friend’. Iva-Mary Cripps & Google, the Miniature Dachshund.

Large black Great Dane and a smaller puppy on a leather chair

Sara took us and our tiny black puppy and helped us with so much humour, patience, and professionalism to grow into responsible, happy, and (very nearly) competent dog owners. In fact some things haven't stopped growing and as our dear Odin is now the size and weight of a small donkey we are going straight back to Sara with a new giant-to-be friend for Odin called Myrtle and can't wait to start the whole process again !! Liver cake anyone?? Cathy Cox with Odin & Myrtle, the Great Danes.

Oscar the Pointer x Labrador

We got Oscar from Animals in Distress when he was about 9 months old. He was described as a 'project dog’ as he knew nothing having probably been shut in a shed for his life until then. Frankly, he was bonkers! He weighed 17kg when we got him, half the weight he should have been; he was a skeleton with a head and a tail. With Sara’s brilliant and sensitive help and support we have been able to transform him into a great, fun, family dog. Without Sara’s help we might have had to return him as despite being experienced rescue dog owners he really was such a handful we were way out of our depth. Thank you Sara. Donna and Steve Miljus & Oscar, the Pointer x Labrador.

Louie the Tibetan Terrier

Research on Tibetan Terriers told us they are not true terriers but Louie does a very good impression! Sara's puppy classes were so helpful, he is certainly well socialised. Her advice on various problems over the past months has been invaluable and got us through the biggest challenges. He's improving all the time. Well look at him, butter wouldn't melt. Stephanie Hurdle & Louie, the Tibetan Terrier.

Nina the Sprollie rolling in the sand

Nina and I did puppy classes, Improvers, and Agility 1, 2 & 3 with Sara. We learned a lot, which will last us forever, but just as important we had a lot of fun. As you can see from the photo, she likes a bit of fun! Lynn Stoddart & Nina, the Spinger Spaniel x Collie.

Kynsa the Labradoodle x collie swimming with a ball in her mouth

Sara, I just wanted to pass on a very big thank you for the puppy training & socialisation course we recently completed. I quickly learned that although this was a dog training course it was also very much a training course for us humans too. Both Kynsa and I have learned a great deal but, most importantly, it was learning with fun! Your lessons were full of important information and great exercises. An additional bonus to your courses is having you always there to answer all sorts of questions; this is a great comfort blanket for us novice owners and your advice was always invaluable. Pat Shepherd & Kynsa, the Labradoodle x Collie.

Zac the Sproodle doing play face with the owner's grandson

As well as being informative and constructive, Sara’s classes were such fun! Lots of laughter. It was a very positive learning experience for both Zac and me. Lyndall Hopcraft & Zac, the Springer Spaniel x Poodle.

A Final Thought...

Here is an anonymous reply from someone to an end of course questionnaire that I gave out:
Q: Is there something I could do to improve the puppy course?
A: No, but could you move into my spare room!? Ta!
